The Art of Creative Writing

Instructor: J. Patrick Redmond
Time: 1:30pm – 4:00pm
Date: May 29 – May 31, 2018

The Art of Creative Writing is designed to introduce beginning writers to the fundamentals, skills, and tools needed for a successful creative writer. The course takes full advantage of the arts community in New Harmony, Indiana, as inspiration for scene and story telling. Students will be immersed in the community’s creative vitality—the quintessential middle America small town.

The Art of Creative Writing is open to 8 student writers and is taught from 1:30pm to 4:00pm on Tuesday, May 29th through Friday, June 1st at the A. C. Thomas House. Student writers, those commuting or lodging locally, will be asked to spend time either before class or after exploring the Atheneum, the art galleries, businesses, neighborhoods, and hiking trails searching and looking for anything that may spark their creative interest and to incorporate these moments in their writing.

As a class we will focus on scene writing and the hero’s journey. Participants will be required to write outside of the workshop, between two and three pages, and be prepared to provide copies and share with all participants. Student writing will be the foundation of our discussions.

The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler and The Scene Book: A Primer for Fiction Writers by Sandra Scofield are the texts that will guide our course. Participants are responsible for obtaining and reading The Scene Book. It can be purchased/ordered online or from one’s local bookstore.

All participants in The Art of Creative Writing will be honored guests at the culminating Arts in Harmony Festival on Saturday, June 2-3. This will be an opportunity for each creative writer to practice and participate in a public reading of their work – a skill necessary for all serious writers.

Throughout the week of class, participants will have the opportunity to attend readings, panel discussions, and art events hosted throughout New Harmony. There will be opportunity to network and connect with advanced fiction/memoir writers workshopping during the morning hours.

Our goal with The Art of Creative Writing is to send each participant home with tools in their creative writing toolbox and the foundation of a story upon which they can begin their creative writing journey!

Lodging arrangements can be made at The New Harmony InnCooks on Brewery Bed and Breakfast, or several guesthouses located throughout the community of New Harmony. Commuters are welcome too!
